Healthy Chinese Elm Placement

Chinese elm bonsai trees are one of the most popular varieties of bonsai as they can grow either indoors or outdoors.
If outdoors, the Chinese elm can be grown in full sun and/or partial shade and will drop its leaves in winter.
If kept indoors, choose a sunny windowsill that receives plenty of light. During winter, make sure that you keep it in a cool room away from central heating and it should hold some leaves.

Healthy Chinese Elm Watering and feeding

They must be watered generously as soon as the top inch of soil gets dry. Do not let the soil dry out fully and avoid constant wetness.
See our watering guide.
Only feed periodically during the growing season (March-Oct).

Healthy Chinese Elm Pruning and wiring

Chinese elms have an excellent twig structure and if pruned constantly will thicken quickly (ramification). They also grow fast and recover rapidly, making them the ideal pruning subject.
The Chinese elm is great for shaping with standard wiring.

Healthy Chinese Elm Repotting

Repot in early spring with a well-draining bonsai soil mix.
